I have trouble rating these FXR Sports 2 x 14″ (35cm) Steel Chrome Spinlock Dumbbell Bars & Collars. On the one hand they’re pretty good for what they are. On the other hand I’m not a fan of standard (as opposed to Olympic) equipment and I really don’t like spinlock collars.
So first of all let’s take them for what they are. I bought some of these when I moved house and was getting my new house organised and saving up to buy better equipment. For a few months all I had were these dumbbell handles, some standard weight plates and a bench.
As far as spinlock dumbbells go they’re pretty good. With other dumbbell handles and collars of a similar nature, I’ve found the collars quickly deteriorated and the threads got damaged; they become loose and rattle and don’t keep the plates firmly in place. But that didn’t happen with these – they worked as they should for the three months or so I had them. They feel pretty good in the hands too.
I also think they’re good value for a mere £14.95.
So, for what they are, there’s nothing much wrong with them.
But I wrote some Home Gym Tips and in that I recommend always going for Olympic (2 inch hole, rather than standard 1 inch hole) equipment because, if you don’t, sooner or later you’ll wish you had.
Furthermore, I recommend avoiding spinlock collars because it’s tedious and tiresome to change the weights on them.
I stand by those points – Olympic equipment with quicklock collars is the way to go.
But I can see a use for these. If you’re an occasional trainer, with perhaps weight training being a minor part of your over all fitness regime then you probably won’t use then enough to get annoyed by them and they’ll be just fine.
But if weight training is your main focus I’d have to recommend avoiding them.
For what they are they score 8/10 but my final, lower rating is based on how useful I think they’d be to the dedicated weight trainer.
